12 Daily Warm-up Exercises

Opus 7 is comprised of 12 etudes in 12 keys for daily guitar warmup. The studies are in various styles from jazz to bluegrass to classical and contain shifting technique practice on all fingers.

In the spirit of my teacher and Berklee mentor, Bill Leavitt, they are riff with "curve balls"!

I play them every day.

NYC Ravel Study Group

This inspiring group of NY-area based composers/orchestrators meets often. Each meeting has a different moderator and topic. This recent meeting, led by the talented film composer, Christopher North, focused on the film music of Toru Takemitsu and finished with a score  analysis of The Emporer's March (Darth Vader's theme) by John Williams.

I am still in a state of awe!

Here's what returning student, Monty Smith, had to say about his recent progress.

"After a hiatus of more than three years, I was finally able to resume monthly lessons with John Carlini. So psyched; it's almost too cool. Already overcome (overwhelmed?) with new information and ideas. Yeah, buddy...."

I was thrilled to re-unite with old friend, David Grisman, and his fantastic sextet on stage at the venerable Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, N.J.

On guitar is latest member, George Cole, and another old friend, Jim Kerwin, on bass.

Not pictured here are the fantastic drummer, George Marsh, the mysterioso flutist, Matt Eakle, and Chad Manning on fiddle.
